A red-and-yellow-marked endemic seabream, recognised at a glance by the bony, pitted ridge across its snout.

The red stumpnose is immediately recognisable by the red and yellow lines across the naked bony area between the eyes, which becomes more corrugated and pitted as the fish ages. It reaches about 50 cm and spawns in spring.
A South African endemic, it is a reef seabream of the southern Cape coast, and a familiar face over rocky ground.
