The dane is a compact reddish seabream marked by prominent canine teeth at the front of the jaw. It keeps to rocky reef, often mixed in with the roman, dageraad and other sparids it resembles in colour.
It is a modest-sized fish that feeds on small invertebrates picked from the reef. On the dive-spot lists it usually appears as a background species rather than a target.
