The catface rockcod is a heavy-bodied grouper growing to about 80 cm, with a body noticeably broad relative to its depth. Juveniles carry a black blotch at the base of the posterior dorsal spines.
It is known only from southern Mozambique down to Knysna, where it is common on reef and rocky bottom to depths of at least 50 m.
