The banded galjoen is a close relative of the galjoen, sharing its tough, deep-bodied build but marked with a series of dark vertical bands. It favours the same broken, wave-swept reef and gully habitat, often right in under the structure.

Like the galjoen it is a hardy, powerful fish for its size, feeding on redbait, mussels and small invertebrates prised from the rocks.
