T-Barge Wreck

The T-Barge is one of three artificial reefs sunk by the Oceanographic Research Institute on 19 December 1990, lying about 3 km off Virginia Beach in 25 m of water. The concrete barge measures 30 m by 20 m by 3 m and comprises 48 compartments of 3 m by 3 m by 3 m, with a gantry like steel superstructure located at the T junction. The site is far enough offshore that visibility may be significantly better than at inshore sites. Batfish, pineapple fish, turtles, pufferfish and lionfish are found on the wreck, and brindle bass have been sighted here. This is not a drift dive, and it is a popular fishing spot, so carrying a knife and a DSMB and diving in buddy pairs is advised.
