Ovington Court Wreck

The Ovington Court was a British flag steel cargo vessel of 6095 tons carrying a cargo of sugar from Mauritius. She was wrecked on 25 November 1940 while awaiting a berth in Durban harbour, when a severe south easterly gale caused her anchors to drag and the ship ran ashore. The wreck was later blown up as it was deemed unsightly by the beach goers of Durban. All that remains are the boilers, lying in about 7 m of water some 50 m out to sea off Addington Beach, visible at low tide. The site can be reached by boat or from shore and is best dived in winter at high tide, when the surge is less.
