The yellowtail rockcod is a grouper of tropical reef, its head profile dipped by a small indentation above the eye and its flank scales smooth and largely skin-covered in big adults.
It occurs from the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean, with fish recorded from Natal northward to Kenya, staying close to reef structure.
