The yellowspotted kingfish is blue-green above and silvery below, usually dusted with many small brassy spots on the sides; large adults often show a row of three black blotches along the midline. It reaches about 100 cm, with a South African spearfishing record of 18 kg.

It patrols rocky coasts, reefs and offshore banks to around 100 m from Durban northward, and is a widespread Indo-West Pacific species. A powerful, fast fish, it is a prime and much-prized spearfishing target.
