The yellowfin needlefish is an elongated, ribbon-thin surface fish of KwaZulu-Natal's warm inshore waters, harbours and estuaries. It is greenish above and silver below, with the long, toothed beak-like jaws typical of needlefish and a yellowish tinge to the fins. It hangs just under the surface, often in small groups, ambushing small fish and prawns.
Anglers hook it on light tackle and small baits and lures, though its bony beak and slim body make it awkward to hook. Divers see it as a shimmering silver line near the surface. Larger needlefish can leap when startled, so keep clear of the sharp snout in a boat or when landing one.
