The whitespotted rockcod is a grouper with an acute opercular flap and mostly ctenoid scales, taking its name from the pale spotting on its body.
It occurs along the east African coast, with fish recorded from Natal up to Zanzibar, holding to reef and rocky ground like other rockcod.
