The white-blotched rockcod is a big grouper growing to around 100 cm, with an uncut dorsal membrane between the spines and ctenoid flank scales bearing auxiliary scales.

It ranges through the Indian Ocean from southern Mozambique to Pakistan and the Persian Gulf, including Aldabra, the Seychelles, Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius and Reunion.
