The twinspot snapper is a robust reef snapper, reddish or bronzy as an adult, with the nostrils set in a deep groove in fish over about 20 cm. Juveniles frequently show two whitish spots high on the upper back, which give the fish its name.

It is a wide-ranging Indo-Pacific reef predator reaching into South African waters. Large individuals from tropical reefs are among the fish most associated with ciguatera poisoning, so big specimens should be treated with caution.
