Tille Kingfish

The tille kingfish is a robust member of the trevally family found along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, silvery to blue-grey with a characteristically steep, blunt head profile and a small dark blotch on the upper edge of the gill cover. It has the hard bony scutes along the tail base shared by the jacks and is a strong, fast swimmer.

It hunts smaller fish over reefs and drop-offs, sometimes in small hunting packs, and gives anglers a hard fight on lures and live bait. Spearos encounter it patrolling reef edges and current lines. It is a good table fish and one of several similar kingfish that need care to tell apart.
