A large deeper-reef grouper covered in fine reddish-brown spots, its spiny dorsal ruled with dark horizontal stripes, growing past a metre.

The tiger rockcod is dressed in small, close-set dark reddish-brown spots, with subhorizontal dark stripes across the spiny dorsal and a row of dark spots along each membrane of the soft dorsal. Armed with strong canines, it reaches at least 100 cm and over 10 kg.
A relatively recently recognised species, it is known from Natal, Mozambique and Madagascar and likely occurs more widely, favouring coral-reef areas in about 20 to 50 m.
