A smooth-scaled grouper of southern African reefs, one of the rockcod that shelter close to rock and cave structure.

The smooth rockcod is a member of the grouper family, robust and reef-dwelling like its rockcod relatives.
As with other groupers it hangs close to rocky reef and cave structure, ambushing prey from cover.
