The longnose kingfish is generally silvery, greenish over the back, with a small dark spot on the gill cover. Its snout has a characteristic profile, sloping gently before dropping abruptly to vertical just above the mouth. It attains about 60 cm.

It lives in coastal waters to at least 60 m, ranging from Algoa Bay northward and eastward across to Japan and Australia. A schooling predator of small fish and invertebrates, it is a worthy light-tackle and spearfishing target.
