The longfin yellowtail is olivaceous to bluish-green above with lighter sides and belly, sometimes flushed brassy or lavender, and adults often keep a dark nuchal bar and a faint amber stripe down the flank. Its fins are mostly dark, and it attains 110 cm and 24 kg.
Adults are pelagic and epibenthic, ranging from Knysna northward, and are seldom caught in inshore waters. A circumtropical species that pushes into temperate seas in places, it is known elsewhere as the almaco jack.
