The longfin kingfish is bluish-grey above and silvery below, with a dark blotch on the upper edge of the gill cover. Adult males develop long, thread-like extensions on the central dorsal and anal rays, and the soft dorsal lobe is sickle-shaped and longer than the head. It reaches about 55 cm.
It inhabits rock and coral coastlines as well as adjacent waters, hunting small fish and invertebrates. Like other kingfish it is a strong, fast swimmer sought by shore and boat anglers.
