Habitat
Sandy areas near rock

The javelin grunter carries lengthwise banding along the body: bifurcated at the front in juveniles, resolving into double lines in adults. It reaches about 50 cm.

It frequents sandy areas close to rocky ground, where it feeds on bottom-living invertebrates. The flesh is good but softens quickly, so fish are best kept cool. It ranges from Madagascar to Natal and is rare south of Durban.
