The honeycomb rockcod is covered head to tail in close-set brown spots, the pale interspaces knitting into a network that gives the fish its name; a single dark blotch sits at the base of the dorsal fin, and the inner face of the pectoral fin carries the same pale netting. It reaches about 30 cm.

It is a shallow-water reef species, ranging across the western Indian Ocean south to Durban and east to the western central Pacific.
