The grey chub is a sea chub, a deep-bodied, herbivorous fish, coloured slate blue with brilliant bronzy lines along the head and the scale rows of the body, and orange pectoral fins. Like its relatives it grazes algae over rock and reef.
It ranges through the Indo-Pacific and reaches south to Algoa Bay, and grows to about 60 cm.
