The flathead mullet is a familiar grey mullet with a broad, flattened head, reaching about 60 cm. It has great leaping powers and is often seen jumping clear of the water.

It lives in all warm and temperate seas, entering estuaries and rivers freely, and is one of the most widespread of all mullets.
