A large red reef seabream of the East Coast, growing biggest on the deeper reefs off Sodwana and Mozambique.

The englishman is one of the larger Chrysoblephus seabreams, a genus that includes the roman and the reds. It has a steep snout and is confined to the east coast, where it favours deepish reef.
It reaches over 100 cm and is most abundant, and grows largest, off Sodwana and southern Mozambique, thinning out southward. It reaches Algoa Bay but is better known in Natal waters, spawns in summer, takes fish bait readily and is good eating.
