The coastal kingfish is a typical silvery trevally, darker over the back and paler below, built for speed with a deeply forked tail and a compressed, streamlined body.
It keeps to rock and coral coastlines and neighbouring inshore waters, hunting small fish and invertebrates. As with its many close relatives, it is a hard-pulling gamefish valued by anglers and spearos.
