The Cape hottentot is bronzy brown, lighter below, and reaches about 46 cm. It is common along the west coast of South Africa north to Angola, and only rarely east of Cape Agulhas, spawning mainly in summer.
A common food-fish of the Cape, it is taken from deepish rocky areas, sometimes in fair numbers.
