The brownspotted rockcod is a fairly compressed grouper with a strongly projecting lower jaw and an angular anal fin in adults, its tail finished with a narrow white rear margin. It grows to about 75 cm.
It ranges from the Red Sea through the Indian Ocean south to Natal, living over coral reef and rocky bottom.
