The bludger is olive-green above and silvery-white below, sometimes with a few brown or golden spots along the midline and a dusky, usually inconspicuous spot on the gill cover. It grows to about 90 cm, with a South African spearfishing record of 14.5 kg.
It is most common over slightly deeper offshore reefs, where big fish tend to be solitary and juveniles form small schools. It ranges from Algoa Bay northward as a widespread Indo-West Pacific species.
