The blood snapper is a richly red-coloured reef snapper, robust-bodied and armed with the strong canine teeth typical of the group. Its deep red colour gives it its name.

Described originally from the Red Sea, it ranges across the western Indian Ocean into South African waters, holding on coral and rocky reef where it is a prized angling and dropline catch.
